Let the Practice Season Begin! Results from the Final 2025 Pin Match

Gentle Shooters,

It was a pretty cold day for pin shooting. Not for the competitors but for the pins. When the temperature drops, the protective white plastic coating on the pins becomes brittle and can shatter. Once that outer barrier is compromised, the pins tend to erupt into showers of kindling. I’ll admit I’m childish, but its very fun to watch.

I have quoted Tom Tyrell many times in these pages, and today is no exception. “We shoot matches because there is no time to practice” and hence practice during the Bowling Pin Season is prohibited. But today marks the last pin match until April 4,2026. So for the next 119 days, I declare it practice season. Please feel free to improve your shooting. A few of us need it! If you doubt it, check below.

The results for December are below. The carbine result should be an embarrassment to each and every one of you. If that moron won, you should hang your head in shame.  And yes, I did recheck the top three shooters for keystroke errors. I suppose even a blind squirrel will occasionally stumble over an errant acorn.

See you in April,

Steven

Pearl Harbor Day Pin Shoot

Gentle Shooters,

Our last bowling pin match of the season is this Saturday, December 6 at 9:00 sharpish. We hold our match at the regionally renowned Airfield Shooting Club range centrally located in stunning Wakefield VA. We won’t shoot pins again until April 4th 2026. That is 119 days without bowling pins, so you don’t want to miss this match. Rules to the match and directions to range are available on our club website www.airfieldshootingclub.org and you can always send vital or pithy questions to our resident assistant adjunct pinhead at [email protected].

See you at the range Saturday.

Steven

Defensive shooting match will not be held this month the next defensive match will be January 3rd weather permitting

Just a quick little post due to the proximity of the 5th Saturday of this month in relation to Thanksgiving and the fact that all of the match directors will be spending time with family the defensive shooting match will not be held this month the next defensive match will be January 3rd weather permitting

November Quick Safety Tip

We will be publishing periodic safety tips.  These tips are a reminder of our safety rules or suggestions on how to be safe at the club.  If you have any questions about these tips or suggestions on topics to cover, please let the Chief Instructor know at [email protected].

ASC Quick Safety Tip

Bringing a Gun to the Line

If the range that you are going to is COLD, you may only bring a gun to the line if it is cased.  A case is anything that prevents you from accessing the gun.  It must be in a range bag, a holster, a gun sock, a hard/soft sided case etc.

If the range is HOT, you may bring the gun to the line without a case, BUT it must unloaded with the muzzle pointed Straight up, action open and facing out (so anyone can see).  Recognize that there are some guns that action doesn’t open like some muzzle loaders or that some shotguns like hinge or break action would be awkward to have muzzle up.

For Muzzle loaders that do not have an “action” to open, all primers, powder need to be removed, and the striker/hammer must be in the halfcocked (safety position) or down position.

For hinge or break action shotguns, they may come to the line with the action open and the barrels pointed to the ground.

When in doubt, always ask the RSO if the line is hot or cold.

Active Shooter Fundamentals Class – Dec 6th!

December 6, 2025 – 8am to 1pm (class will initially meet at the 4H Center for a classroom portion)

Cost: $40 for club members and $60 for non-club members (12 spots available).

Class will be taught be ASC Member Sean Powell

This class will cover fundamentals the civilian responder should consider in the event of an active killer/shooter. Classroom will cover basic principles to follow and range drills will cover basic drills and evaluations to help a student understand their current capabilities with their chosen handgun. Students should have a grasp of basic skills for the defensive handgun.

Required Equipment:

Students will need a quality/functional handgun.

At least two spare magazines (would recommend more if using a single stack handgun or revolver)

Quality holster that covers the trigger guard. Suggest students work from concealment (avoid nylon/soft leather holsters and trigger finger retention devices (For example Blackhawk SERPA holsters). If military/law enforcement/security could use duty holsters

Eye and Ear Protection – Electronic Ear Protection Recommended

300 rounds of practice ammunition and at least 20 rounds of defensive/carry/duty ammunition.

Notepad and Pen/Pencil

Zero handguns prior to the class if they have red dots or adjustable iron sights.

Rimfire Challenge, A modified Long Gong Challenge

Rimfire Challenge, A modified Long Gong Challenge

The 100 Yard Gong shooting event is uniquely designed to test and challenge your shooting skills. Join us on Sunday, November 16th, 2025, for a day of fun 22LR shooting.  This event includes individual and two-person teams scoring each other’s hits and misses.

Participants will shoot up to 5 rounds of 10 shots each. Each round has a 3-minute time limit, which begins and ends on the match director’s commands/Range Safety Officer.  The event is shot from a bench rest and is limited to bipods or front bags only.  No front rest, sleds, or rear bags allowed.

Please transport all firearms to and from vehicles in a case.   When the range is called “COLD,” actions will be open with empty chamber flags inserted.  No gun or magazine handling AT ALL when the range is COLD. That includes scope adjustment or any other form of handling. There will be enough time during a HOT range to make any required adjustments.

This event is open to members and the public.  Airfield Shooting Club requires that all non-member participants fill out the Guest Waiver form.  The cost is $5 for ASC Members and $10 for Non-Members.  FOUL WEATHER will CANCEL this event.

Three gongs: a 3”, a 2”, and a 1” gong target will be placed at the 100-yard berm. The score is totaled for each shooter, with a possible high score of 27 points (1+2+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3=27). A complete game includes five complete sets, totaling 50 rounds of ammunition (1 whole box). The highest possible score for a competition is 135 points. In case of a tie score, the winner is determined by the shooter with the highest single-round score.

All participants must attend the Safety Meeting to shoot!  The range set-up/sighting-in period lasts until 8:30 AM, and then the range goes cold for the 8:30 AM Mandatory Safety Meeting/Instructions. The match starts at 9:00 a.m. and lasts until noon.

All participants must attend the Safety Meeting to shoot!  *** The 100 Meter Range is Closed for this Event. *** For more information about this event, contact the Match Director, Tom Sanford, at [email protected].

November Bowling Pin Match Results.

Gentle Shooters,

I’m afraid to ask what happened this month. What is the reference to Paul “The Carpenter” Lynch. Better yet, don’t tell me. I am certain I am happier not knowing. And Taylor is truly becoming a Bowling Pin Match Director. The proof is there. He dropped his first string of the day. The curse continues! And Shooters, about your penmanship. Try it! Your mama taught you better that what I saw on my cards this month! With that said, my free range interpretation of your chicken scratch is tallied below for your embarrassment and amusement. If you are so inclined to finish out the 2025 shooting season with us, the last shoot until April is December 6th.

November Bowling Pin Match Saturday

Gentle Shooters,

Just like clockwork, the first Saturday of the month is nigh which can only mean two things. Half price Halloween candy and the Bowling Pin Match is back for another installment. You don’t need a costume, we’ve seen most of you. But please do come down to the renowned ASC range in picturesque Wakefield this Saturday to battle with those dastardly reactive wooden targets. We set up promptly around nine-ish. There is a full description of the match along with the rules at our web site www.airfieldshootingclub.org. And we have a pinhead who answers at least half of the pin shooting questions posed to him correctly (sort of?) Contact him at [email protected] with half of your questions.

Range Rules Review

In light of the recent increase of rule/safety infractions, the ASC board will be reviewing and revising the Range Rules with the goal of simplifying, clarifying and hopefully condensing the rules.  If you have comments or suggestions, please send them in an email to [email protected].  All input will be reviewed by the Governance Committee and possibly forwarded on to the board for incorporation into the Rules.

Although all submissions will be read and reviewed, please do not expect a response.

Art Schoner

ASC President

Safety First

Fellow members I want to reiterate and emphasize our commitment to safety on the range.  There have been several instances lately where it appears a causal attitude is being taken with how firearms are being handled.  Compliancy kills and will shut down the club.  If you have not reread the rules lately, please do so.  We have these in place to prevent accidents.  Lately we have found where people have discharges rounds outside of our range, bringing uncased guns to the line when the line is cold, handling guns when people are down range, and having people down range when shooting has started.  We take these infractions very seriously.  Someone’s life could have been easily taken with some of these violations.  We are urging you to have ruthless adherence to safety practices and be polite but firm in monitoring others at the club if you see a safety infraction.

If you have ANY questions about what is safe or not, please let us know.  We would much rather answer questions now vs taking disciplinary action or worse having to address an injury or death.  With no staff, we rely on you, our members, to keep our range safe.

Thank you in advance for your efforts in these matters.
