ASC Announce

The Center is hosting a work party/day this Saturday, September 6th.  The details are:

 

Hours 9AM to 3PM work.

Lunch at noon.

Swimming, dinner and s’mores afterwards.

Projects include:

Building shelves in the attics, replacing the bench tops at our amphitheater (a dumpster will be there and lumber was delivered yesterday) and Farm Fresh Fire circle, building picnic tables, PAINTING the exterior of SPAIN and Captain Yancey and inside the Farm Fresh building, water sealing decks and benches, picking up sticks around the grounds and moving logs – yep! – burning old files, organizing classrooms and two sheds, hedge trimming around the pool fence, and more. FUN!  FUN! FUN!

Please RSVP with the Center for a head count for lunch.  757-899-4901

Sig 320 Concerns and Rule Changes

Fellow members,

For those that have not been following social media and news reports, the Sig Sauer P320 has come under a lot of scrutiny lately due to what appears to be un-commanded  discharges.  Currently there is no clear answer as to why this is happening.  The majority of issues we have seen are associated with the gun being in a holster.  Many of us own Sig 320 platforms and have never had an issue.  The safety of the platform however does concern us.  As a result we have done the following:

  1. Modified the range rules to include a TEMPORARY section which includes a BAN on having a Sig P320, LOADED in a holster on ASC property.  You may still shoot the gun without a using a holster.  Keep in mind that we still don’t allow any loaded gun to be set down on a bench unless it is an emergency.
  2. We have added an Sig Sauer P320 Information web page to capture information about the platform. Information about the ban is included here as well as the range rules.

Please understand this ban we hope is temporary until a clear reason and solution (if applicable) is made.  We recognize that many people own this firearm and it is an inconvenience  We also recognize that many popular platforms have gone through similar issues only to be successfully resolved.  We are optimistic that this can happen soon.  Until that time we want to limit the exposure of risk to help ensure our members and their guests remain safe.

August Rimfire Challenge has been canceled.

Just to let you know, the Rimfire Challenge for this month has been canceled due to a recent death in my immediate family.   I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the late notice.  Thank you for being so supportive during this time,.  We will resume next month as scheduled.   Tom Sanford

New Range Rules Posted

We have posted new Range Rules.  Below is a summary of the changes.

  • Pg 7, Section I -D1 amplified that no shooting should take place outside of 6 am to 10 pm regardless of sunrise and sunset.
  • Pg 7, Section I-D3.   Removed Sunday noise restriction requirements.
  • Pg 9, Section I-D15. New. Added clarity that shotguns maybe used on the SRB, 50yd and 100m ranges.
  • Pg 10, Section E-5, Removed verbiage about secretary forwarding the waivers to the 4-H center.
  • Pg 11, Section I-G6. Added table to describe the safe distance to shoot steel based on ammunition type. Removed paragraph wording which described the same.
  • Pg 12, Section I-H. Added entire section about ammunition type to be used on the range to include when shooting steel targets and other than steel targets.
  • Pg 23, Section V.  Added AED to the emergency equipment to get during an emergency.

There were any number of dreams dashed on the ASC’s Pistol Range at the August Match. Some experienced equipment failure while others saw ammo stop working at critical junctures. There were also widespread accusations of practice between matches. The match director pointed out that we shoot matches because there is no time to practice. But with the July match cancelled due to Director apathy, technically there was time to practice, so it was allowed. Will a full slate of matches until December, practice is over until the end of the season .  And as always, the cream rises to the top. Our next match is September 6th. See you at the range.

The Umpteenth Dog Days Bowling Pin Shoot

Gentle Shooters,

I have called the August shoot the Dog Days shoot for as long as there has been an internet and I have run the matches. But this month, that amounts to false advertising. With temperatures forecast at 80 degrees, this might be the most seasonal dog days ever. Its a great time to join your friends at the August ASC Bowling Pin match, held at the regionally renowned 50 yard range in Wonderful Wakefield. We begin setup at 9AM sharp, more or less Saturday August 2nd. For information about the match, please see our page at the ASC site. You can find rules and suggestions there. For specific questions, we employ a pinhead bot at [email protected] who can give vague and misleading answers on a variety of pin shooting and Corvette topics. Beta 2.0 Use with caution.

July 20th Rimfire Challenge – Barnyard Bash

Rimfire Challenge – Barnyard Bash

SRB – 50 yd Range is reserved for this Rimfire Challenge –

The Barnyard Bash Rimfire Challenge is for 22 LR only. This month’s challenge, on Sunday, July 20th, is a speed shooting competition shooting at barnyard animals: (steel chickens, boars, turkeys & rams) in four strings to complete the match.  Each target hit is worth 1 point.  40 points total for each match.  

The course of fire is designed to be completed by even the most inexperienced shooter using one 10-round magazine without reloading “on the clock.” I recommend a minimum of two magazines, each holding five rounds.  It is open to all; even the young and old can easily participate.

A $5.00 entry fee applies to members, and $10.00 to guests.

I need help setting up the range at 7:00 am and taking it down after the match.  Safety Meeting 8:30-9:00 am. The safety meeting is mandatory to shoot the match. The match starts promptly at 9:00 am. Contact Match Director: Tom Sanford, [email protected]

I just wanted to ensure that all pin shooters are aware that there will not be a match on Saturday July 5.  It’s too close to the holiday, and none of your favorite pin match directors are available.
