Free Cyber Class – April 8th (this Wed)

ASC Family,
Just a couple days away and I am so excited to be your presenter for the Safe and Secure Online cyber-security presentation next week.
The presentation is completely free.  I am a proud member of the Airfield Shooting Club and an NRA Instructor.  In my day job, I am an IT Instructor for the US Navy.  I have worked in the IT and Cyber-Security field for over 40 years.  I hold the CISSP certification through ISC2 and that enables me to deliver this training.  Again, there is no charge, nothing to buy or anything like that.  Purely public service.  Ok, in the spirit of full disclosure I do get 1 hour of continuing education for being your host.  I am also available to provide this presentation online or in person for other groups so if you need a guest speaker just let me know. The presentation is geared towards adults, but there are other versions geared towards kids and college student age audiences.  The presentation takes about an hour and I will then take some questions.  If you have any questions in advance, please email me at [email protected] or you can reach me through Scott Sampson.

No Foolin’ It’s Pin Shooting Time again

Gentle Shooters,

We have waited for months through a cruel winter for this day. Saturday, April fourth at nine o’ clock in the morning, at the regionally renowned Airfield Shooting Club Range in idyllic Wakefield, Virginia the 2026 ASC Bowling Pin Cup will kick off. Changes for 2026 include … not much. The same rules and description as last year are still available at our website.Your host for the shoot will be none other than Club President Art Schoner and a fat, grumpy, old pinhead. Any questions, bonk a pinhead at [email protected].

See you Saturday,

Steven

All Ranges Closed for 2 Days!

The contractor will be onsite Thursday and Friday.  All ranges will be closed as access to the range will also be limited.  Ranges will be open for regular activities Saturday morning

Berm Maintenance and Road Repair is Starting

It is critical to check the club calendar (Calendar – Airfield Shooting Club) before heading to the range this week.  Timberland Contracting will be on-site to work on the 50 and 100 berms, the shotgun fields, an old trap house, and finally upgrading the range road. Individual ranges may be closed or access to the entire range complex could be blocked. I’ll post additional information on the calendar as I receive it from Timberland.

4H Center Work Day

Here is a chance for service hours if you still need some(this workday is before the end of March so hours should apply to the current membership year), or if you want to help out the 4H center. From Bubba at the 4H Center, mulch will be spread so pitch forks and square point shovels will be needed. Loppers for cutting brush and a chainsaw or two would be nice as the center has a log splitter and they need some longer logs cut up. I am sure a good general cleanup will occur also so maybe a leaf blower or 2 would’nt hurt. I will not be at the work party and I am not sure if any board members will be there either. If you decide to show up please sign in and out at the center and let them know you are a ASC member, please write your member number down, as I am sure that Kathy will ensure that the club gets a list of  ASC volunteers.

Cory, AKA The MO

Are you in need of club service hours for the 2026/2027 year? Get yours early!

On Saturday, April 11th, 2026 from 10am-12pm, the Holiday Lake 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) decided on Airfield as the location for their meeting and requested (rented) the 50 & SRB Ranges for their training.  This will be a good way to show Holiday Lake what a great facility we have.

We need two awesome people to set up the 50/SRB range and be RSO for this group. If you’re interested, please contact Brenda Norton at [email protected] for more details and to volunteer.

Work Party Success

Thanks to the 25 members for showing up and knocking it out of the park today. Hope I get it all that we completed.
-Pin tables were made for the upcoming illustrious pin match season, may all your fired rounds not hit the tables! LOL
-Frames for all the ranges were built and extras for a few, speaking of frames, Jim Manning said, hey lets expand the 100 (well I am guessing), so he and a small crew measured the range and laid out new holes, dug new holes and now the club has 5 frames on the 100 for your shooting pleasure, please try not to hit the frames, LOL.

-Brenda, Wes and a small army worked on the shotgun range and tore down part of a wall that was falling down, put together traps on carts and we even placed the trap all the way at the top of the tower. Awesome job to all that helped! Don’t worry Steve we know you were working hard. Also, thank you to Matt, my son, for using his skid steer to bring all the traps from the conex to the 5 stand.

– We then had a small crew, Wes, Tom, Brian, again Matt and others that helped spin the sign in shed 90 degrees. This will allow the last shooting station on the 100 to be used as a true shooting station. It was a small task, but without that skid steer it would not have happened. So for all the member that come to the range, it will look a little different.

Although a small item on the list, a magnet was placed at the sign in shed, yes I know finally, on the shelf that the sign in book sits. This will allow members to check their ammo for steel cores or bi metallic rounds, only if you are shooting steel.

Finally, I was able to get the AED holder powered back up so that our AED will have heat in the winter and a cooling fan in the summer. Also a general purpose receptacle was added just under the AED, for whatever is needed. This was requested by a board member to allow his matches to get live updates after the matches our completed, this is a much needed addition and one further down the range is planned in the future. Please understand on the SRB/50 that their is limited power because this single circuit is shared with the 4H centers drink machine. An additional circuit is also planned in the future.

..

I want to thank Art, aka El Effe, for helping with directing some of the work party and the frame and pin table building expertise. Vance and Jenny Owens for stepping up and assisting me today, while I was running around like a chicken with my head half cut off. Brenda and Wes for spear heading the work on the shotgun range and also with the rotating of the sign in shed. Tom for taking on the smallest but largest task of cleaning and placing items back in the sign in shed after we spun that thing like a playground toy. My son and club member Matt for bring the his skid steer down for abuse from all, moving traps, spinning the sign in shed, cleaning up and back dragging the road to the dumpster and moving all the wood from the trailer to the range and moving the completed, lead free, pin tables. Taylor for building his new, much lighter, stands for the defensive shooting matches, and for hauling off all the shot up frames. Kenny and the crew of unknown names (stinks getting old) for working on the ballistic wall bracing, yes I will get some all thread and also some new drill bits. Jim Manning for spear heading the 100 upgrade and donating his powered post hole digger to the club for future use, at one point Jim had over 6 miles worth of steps in before noon, sure he finished up with almost 10. Finally thank you to all the members that gave up their personal time to make the club better for all. If I forgot to mention your name, please understand I know who you are by face but I seem to not be able to remember names like I used to.

Thank you again,

Cory, aka The MO
