March 18 through March 20 the Airfield Shooting Club will be holding a NSSA registered skeet shooting competition. The competition will have four (4) categories (guns): 12 gauge 20 gauge 24 gauge 410 gauge Doubles There will be a cash prize for first place in each category. The cost is $25 per gun. In order to participate you must pre-register and be a member of NSSA. On the day of the shoot you will need 1.    Cash or check for $25 for each gun. Checks are to be payable to Airfield Shooting Club 2.    NSSA membership card. You may join the NSSA at the shoot, the yearly membership is $30.00 3.    Classification Sheet. The competition will allow mixed guns each day so you may compete on any of the 3 days. Ties for Gun Championships will be decided by long runs from the front or back whichever is longer. Good afternoon folks! The board just finished its February board meeting and we are happy to announce that we think we have a path forward.  The board approved two contracts to conduct necessary range repair/maintenance.  The first contract we need to execute is for the removal of the lead from the berms.  This contract is expected to be awarded to a company, MT2 to facilitate.  The 2nd contract is to a company for the repair of the Short Range Berm and build up of the 50yd and 100m ranges. The removal of lead is required before we can repair the berms for a number of reasons. The repair cannot start until the lead removal is complete. Because the Airfield Conference Center actually own the property we need our proposal to approved their Board.  The new Director of the Center was present at our meeting and will try to get it completed next week.  She is in agreement with the ASC Board’s direction. We don’t have specific dates as this is just breaking.  We are hoping to have MT2 out in March to remove the lead.  We are hoping to know dates next week or perhaps early the following week.  It …

Good Evening!  Saturday Feb 4th there will be a Tidewater Friends of NRA banquet at the Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake, VA.  Doors Open at 5:30.  If interested we need to get head counts to the Club by Tuesday.  Please go to the Friends of NRA website to purchase your ticket or better yet a Table (and get a gun!).  Our events average 1 gun for every 10 people.  This gives you a great odds to win a gun via raffle, game or live auction.  Dinner is included for your ticket price. Virginia Friends of NRA just got done assinging grants to the amount of $405K.  The majority of our money goes to 4-H shooting programs, Boy Scout Camps and Councils, JROTC, youth shooting programs and even some college shooting teams.  We also have awarded money to police departments for ballistic vests for K9s and Eddie Eagle Costumes and more.  None of the money goes to salaries.  This is the non-profit side of the NRA so we can’t do any of the politics etc.  We simply raise money to help ensure our shooting sports remain alive. Fellow members, We wanted to give you an update and let you know we have been actively working the repairs to the range.  We worked throughout the holiday period and contacted several contractors most said they were not interested or didn’t call back.  We tried to meet with two contractors.  One did not show up the other did and had a great meeting and we received their proposal just before Christmas. We are asking for some significant repairs and some upgrades, so the price tag is large.  We actually through the help of the Center got one more contractor to meet with us.  They were at the range on yesterday (Saturday) and will be giving us a bid soon.  At that point the board will be reviewing both and making a determination. The work will involve replacing the SRB and lengthening it by 12′ to give us more shooting bays.  We are also looking at leveling the ground in front of the SRB and creating a better drainage and repairing both the 50 and 100 berms.  This level of repair is significant but in the end we feel is necessary to ensure our safety and continued enjoyment of the shooting …

We are offering a Shotgun fundamentals class January 14th  for 8 people – We only have a few spots left..  It will be taught by Dale Mullin. We plan on offering an advance class covering skeet and trap at some point in the near future and this class will be required to attend those classes.  If you don’t take this class you must be proficient with a shotgun and have participated somewhat regularly in shotgun sports (trap, skeet, 5-stand, sporting clays or hunt). What to Bring:  4 boxes of shells with a shot size of 7-1/2 or 8. A shotgun. Keep in mind that a home defense shotgun is probably not the best choice. A semi-automatic or over and under field guns are desired. A pump action shotgun can be used but you will be at a disadvantage in the game of skeet. Since the SRB is closed while we make repairs to it, I wanted to make sure that people knew how to move the firing line closer to the berm.  If you are interested in shooting at closer distances than 25 yds, you are able to move the line forward of the existing firing line.  To do so there are a few things that you need to do: All parties on the line must agree to it (including the RSO). The RSO would call the line cold (ie all parties must case their firearms or holster them). RSO announce we are moving the line down range. Everyone moves to the location as designated by the RSO.  It is great if there is a cone or something that people can see but if not the RSO will do their best to maintain a straight line so no one is forward of someone else. At this point the RSO can all the line hot and commence shooting. It is imperative that any personnel that are moving behind the firing line have their guns cased or holstered.  There will be NO handling of firearms behind the Firing line only on the firing line. Register now for Handgun Combatives Course Sept 23/24,  2023 ASC is hosting David Jenkins, founder of Rochester Personal Defense to put on Dave Spaulding’s Handgun Combatives Class.  Dave Spaulding retired and has only certified a few folks to continue teaching his course and Dave Jenkins is one of them.  I have known Dave Jenkins for several years and taken instructor classes with him as well as taken classes from him and can recommend Dave completely. Good Afternoon Folks, Last Friday we inspected the Range Separation wall between the 50 and 100.  We found very disturbing indications that people had shot the wall.  Not only had they shot the wall, but one round impacted the very top row about 18″ from the end of the wall.  It would not surprise me that rounds left the 50 and landed on the 100m range!  I shouldn’t have to tell you how dangerous this is. I implore you to follow the rules and not shoot to the right of the white arrow on the 50 yd range!  Someone’s life may very well be at stake.  We did not make this rule for the heck of it.  There is a reason for it. While I was there we also noted that a 50 yard target frame was in the 25 yd position.  To be fair the target frames are not labeled, however the 25 yd target frames are much taller than the 50 yd target frames.  If you use a 50 yd target frame at the 25, you may very well be shooting the ground.  PLEASE be mindful of which target frames you are using and where your rounds are …
