Gentle Shooters, Some of you showed up ready to pick up where you left off last December. Others of us had a bit of rust to shake off. And not just in the shooting department. Match Director Art Schoner pointed out we forgot the service hours sign up sheet. He asks that all who worked set up or tear down to let him know at [email protected]. In addition, despite what you see in the results below, I declare Allen Moran the ultimate winner of the match. We had another administrative failure. One of our scorers omitted a time in minor for Allen and I’m sure if I had that he would have won it all. I’d like to thank all 19 of the shooters who came out this month and shared their time and passion for shooting with us. I hope you enjoyed it as much I did. I look forward to seeing you all next month on  May 2nd for the next rendition of frustration via simple wooden reactive targets. Gentle Shooters, We have waited for months through a cruel winter for this day. Saturday, April fourth at nine o’ clock in the morning, at the regionally renowned Airfield Shooting Club Range in idyllic Wakefield, Virginia the 2026 ASC Bowling Pin Cup will kick off. Changes for 2026 include … not much. The same rules and description as last year are still available at our website.Your host for the shoot will be none other than Club President Art Schoner and a fat, grumpy, old pinhead. Any questions, bonk a pinhead at [email protected]. See you Saturday, Steven

Gentle Shooters, It was a pretty cold day for pin shooting. Not for the competitors but for the pins. When the temperature drops, the protective white plastic coating on the pins becomes brittle and can shatter. Once that outer barrier is compromised, the pins tend to erupt into showers of kindling. I’ll admit I’m childish, but its very fun to watch. I have quoted Tom Tyrell many times in these pages, and today is no exception. “We shoot matches because there is no time to practice” and hence practice during the Bowling Pin Season is prohibited. But today marks the last pin match until April 4,2026. So for the next 119 days, I declare it practice season. Please feel free to improve your shooting. A few of us need it! If you doubt it, check below. The results for December are below. The carbine result should be an embarrassment to each and every one of you. If that moron won, you should hang your head in shame.  And yes, I did recheck the top three shooters for keystroke errors. I suppose even a blind squirrel will occasionally stumble over an errant acorn. See you in April, Steven ASC Bowling Pin …

That is 119 days without bowling pins, so you don’t want to miss this match. See you at the range Saturday. Steven

Gentle Shooters, I’m afraid to ask what happened this month. What is the reference to Paul “The Carpenter” Lynch. Better yet, don’t tell me. I am certain I am happier not knowing. And Taylor is truly becoming a Bowling Pin Match Director. The proof is there. He dropped his first string of the day. The curse continues! And Shooters, about your penmanship. Try it! Your mama taught you better that what I saw on my cards this month! With that said, my free range interpretation of your chicken scratch is tallied below for your embarrassment and amusement. If you are so inclined to finish out the 2025 shooting season with us, the last shoot until April is December 6th. Gentle Shooters, Just like clockwork, the first Saturday of the month is nigh which can only mean two things. Half price Halloween candy and the Bowling Pin Match is back for another installment. You don’t need a costume, we’ve seen most of you. But please do come down to the renowned ASC range in picturesque Wakefield this Saturday to battle with those dastardly reactive wooden targets. We set up promptly around nine-ish. There is a full description of the match along with the rules at our web site www.airfieldshootingclub.org. And we have a pinhead who answers at least half of the pin shooting questions posed to him correctly (sort of?) Contact him at [email protected] with half of your questions. Steven

Gentle Shooters, I have diligently compiled the results from the latest match. Some of you had a rough day! But penmanship probably suffered the worst. There is a column for time and a column for pins and they are there for a reason. Likewise, form numbers clearly. You learned this in first grade. Along with how to clearly print your first and last name.  Unless you are Art because I know who he is and there is only one Art. You know, I swore that when I got old, I would not be grumpy. I also swore that I would eventually shoot this match clean. So please temper your expectations of me. If you are tired of the rant, take comfort in the fact that the next match is November 1st. Until then, ponder these results. Gentle Shooters, Saturday dawned bright and temperate for our shooters. Both the ambient and shooting temperature took of quickly once the match began. Paul Lynch and Cort Tompkins went back and forth for the lead for fastest string in Carbine. Boys, you are still over a tenth of a second off of the record held by Cory Allen at 2.03 seconds. December is coming so there will be time to practice. And I would like to extend a personal thanks to my co-match director and plastic car co-conspirator  Art Schoner. His innovative “testing failure points during competition” program ensured that even my poor shooting could not propel me to the bottom of the aggregate rankings. Next match is Saturday, October 4th.
