Bowling Pin Season Closes – Practice Season Opens

Gentle Shooters, One of my very favorite match directors, Tom Tyrell used to say “We shoot matches because there is no time to practice.” For me back in the day, that was often true with the varied demands of a young family, career, and of course shooting. We really can’t shoot Bowling Pins in the coldest months of the year because the plastic coating shatters and the pins disintegrate rapidly. Since there are no pin matches until April, I hereby open the 2025 Bowling Pin Practice season today through April 5th. Practice is prohibited during bowling pin season in deference to Tom. The match Saturday saw several notable performances.Cory Allen turned in a blistering 2.03 second carbine string. He then ruined it by proclaiming that he didn’t think he could do it any faster. Man, have you never fished? There is always a bigger fish. Cort Tompkins and Taylor Strickland both shot the match clean, not leaving a single pin behind. Congratulations. For the rest of us, print out these results, tape them on your mirror, look at them every morning, and vow to do better. Next Match is Saturday April 6th and don’t forget the defensive matches on the …

Bowling Pin Season Closes this Saturday

Gentle Shooters, We have arrived at that sad time of year again. This Saturday, December 7th, will be the last match of the 2024 season. And no one has achieved our ultimate goal of a sub two second string on carbine. Schoner’s eyes are all tuned up and Strickland has several absolutely sick carbines to run. You can never count out Tompkins either. It is expected to be quite a match and it would be a crime to miss it. As always, we will compete at the bucolic Airfield Shooting Club in idyllic Wakefield, VA. We start at 9:30, but if you have questions, you can consult our resident chief adjunct  pinhead at [email protected] or refer to our web page.at any time. See you Saturday, Steven

November Bowling Pin Match Results

Gentle Shooters, We are almost back to practice season, and judging by some of the scores, the timing seems appropriate. But yet there is time to ponder a few things. Will Art ever shoot the match clean? Will Cort ever miss again. But one thing is for certain, after Tuesday at least for TV ads it will be truck month again. Finally, the election and all of the noise that goes with it will be over. Until then, consider that our last match of 2024 will be on Pearl Harbor Day, Saturday December 7th. Whilst you wait, contemplate the results below. Bowling Pin Match … or Early Zombie Practice? Find out October 5th

Gentle Shooters, This Saturday, October 5th. at 9:30 at the bucolic Airfield Shooting Club in scenic Wakefield Virginia, we will hold a heroic bowling pin match. With Halloween just around the corner, you can’t be too careful about those zombies. Bowling Pins are just like zombies. You have to hit them square or they will just hurt your brain. (Or at least your ego.) So select your semi autos, corral your carbines, and round up those revolvers and ride down to the range for the match. Brush up on the rules or get directions from our web page and then come on down to the shoot. Specific questions can be directed to our pinhead at [email protected]. Steven

September Bowling Pin Match Results

Gentle Shooters, While we missed several stalwart pin shooters this month Like Cory and Art, who were working a service project for the club, the shooters who made the match were greeted with comfortable temperatures and friendly if overcast skies. As is often the case, best friends battled for supremacy in the carbine class. In what was supposed to be the battle of the Buckhammers, Taylor Strickland and Paul Lynch were set to duke it out on the gray sands of Airfield. But Taylor’s gun jammed in some prematch testing and he dropped back to a 45 ACP carbine. The 45 still reigned supreme, as the results show. While you are only going to see pins do a 360 and nearly land on their bases erect by attending a match, the next best thing are our results, which are listed below. Help Needed Hauling Bowling Pins

Gentle Shooters, If you are a shotgunner, you know it is dove season. If you are a bowler, it is time for new leagues for the fall. When those start, tehy replace the existing pins with new ones. That makes it bowling pin season. They are available now and we will lose them if we don’t act. We need to haul 80 cases each from two bowling alleys. We would like to do it next Tuesday, September 10th at 7PM. I need volunteers with trucks or SUV’s to haul pins from Lynnhaven in Virginia Beach and Indian River in Chesapeake to our warehouse near Northampton Blvd and Diamond Springs Rd in Virginia Beach. We will award service hours for your effort. If you can assist, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks, Steven

September Bowling Pin Match

Gentle Shooters, Your are cordially invited to attend the latest installment of how the pins fall at this Saturday’s ASC Bowling Pin Match. The match is Saturday, September 7th at 9:30 at the county class facility in stunning Wakefield, VA. Consider the fact that the club allows us one Saturday a month to take over the 50 yard range and shoot these delightedly absurd, fun reactive targets. Why you ask. Perhaps because we still can? I don’t know, but it is a lot of fun! If you have never done it, you owe yourself the experience at least once. If you haven’t done it in a while, ammo is available and somewhat reasonable, so why wouldn’t now be a good time time to drop by. Our match rules and directions are available at our fantastic web site www.airfieldshootingclub.org and specific comments and questions can be directed to our senior adjunct associate inspector general pinhead at [email protected]. See you at the match Steven

Dog Days Pin Shoot Results

Gentle Shooters, The Dog Days match lived up to its reputation this year. The shooting was fun and there were the exceptional moments. Kenny Hardee took out a pin in mid fall before it could knock two others flat and ruin his string. Taylor Strickland dominated with an entirely clean shoot on his way to a sweep of the five gun.  Our next match is September 7th. See you then. Results are below.
